Dear David:

I want to take this opportunity to thank you formally for participating as a trainer in our twenty (20) hour introductory mediation skills training program. I apologize for the delay in getting this letter to you. It has been on my mind since the training was completed. Mike and I deeply appreciate the precious time you took to help us with this training. Your involvement and personal experience helped us give depth to the training.

The enclosed certificate is a small token showing our appreciation. We hope that it will be of aid to you in furthering your mediation career.

Words cannot adequately express our gratitude and thanks for the gift of your time and your talent. If you ever have a similar need, please do not hesitate to call on me.

Sincerely yours,
– CASEY GWINN, City Attorney

To Whom It May Concern:

David Phears was my coach for three months in 1996. The reason I wanted a coach was that I felt I had some things I wanted to accomplish, and I was having trouble doing it by myself. I needed someone to help me stay focused, someone to encourage me and acknowledge my efforts, someone to gently but firmly guide my progress. I didn't want someone to give me any answers, because I knew what I wanted to do. I was just having trouble getting there.

I hired David as my coach because he was easy to talk to, and I felt that I could trust him. His quiet thoughtful style made me feel comfortable. Once we got started I found him to be kind, supportive, and a very good listener. I always felt that he was there for me, 100%. He was especially good at noticing how I tended to say things or use words that took away my own personal power. He had a very gentle way of calling my attention to what I just said, or the way I said it. Then I could discover on my own the potential effect my words might have. I could choose to make a change

One of the most valuable things I learned from David was that I need not make commitments before I am ready. I discovered that I may not always be ready to do things I might feel I "should" do, and I learned to forgive myself for that. I learned, with David's help, that when I am ready to do something, I really know it, and if I commit before I am ready, I won't follow through. No matter how many "shoulds" I am feeling!

Anyone who has the good fortune to have David as their coach, I am sure will benefit. I know his skills as a coach, mentor and friend will continue to serve others who bring him into their lives.

Sincerely,
